DDOT Rebrand

Brand Launch and Communications Strategy

Summary

DDOT had invested in improving service, introducing new routes, and modernizing the rider experience. The challenge wasn't creating a new logo—it was helping Detroit understand what was changing and why it mattered. As part of the city's rebranding initiative, I led the communications strategy supporting the launch of the new brand and accompanying service updates, turning a new brand into a story Detroit could understand.

The Challenge

  • Translating Operational Data: Communicating technical fare changes, route updates, and service improvements in a way that was simple, clear, and relevant to everyday riders.

  • Complex Multi-Channel Rollout: Coordinating a massive launch that touched nearly every rider across the city, requiring consistent messaging before, during, and after the rollout.

  • Agency & Public Alignment: Bridging the gap between high-level concepts from an external branding agency and the practical, community-focused execution needed on the ground in Detroit.

The Strategy & Approach

Working alongside an external branding agency, I developed the supporting creative assets, communication plans, press materials, marketing collateral, and launch strategy that introduced the new identity. Because the rebrand required careful coordination, I focused on creating communication materials that ensured riders received consistent, easy-to-understand information across multiple channels, while directly supporting community events and public engagement efforts surrounding the campaign.

My role included:

  • Communications Strategy & Campaign Planning: Building the master launch communications plan to synchronize public messaging across the city.

  • Public Information & Content Development: Authoring press releases, route and fare change communications, and public-facing messaging tailored for clarity.

  • Creative Direction & Marketing Communications: Developing supporting brand collateral, campaign assets, and digital materials that brought the new identity to life.

  • Event Communications: Crafting targeted materials to support community events and grassroots public engagement efforts.

The Impact

The communications campaign helped introduce DDOT's new brand alongside critical service updates in a way that was clear, coordinated, and deeply community-focused.

  • Immediate Ridership Lift: Contributed directly to a 10% increase in ridership within the first three months of the launch.

  • Cohesive Public Awareness: Successfully strengthened public understanding of the transit system's ongoing transformation, shifting sentiment through clear information.

  • Seamless Information Rollout: Eliminated rider confusion during a major transition by keeping information consistent across digital assets, print collateral, and live community events.
